Dismantling e-waste workshop with Katie Surridge

  • Wed 14 & Thu 15 Dec
  • 10am–5pm
  • Artist Residency Studio & Space 3
  • Free, drop-in

DARE Art Prize winner and artist Katie Surridge hosts a series of drop-in workshops for dismantling your e-waste.

Using e-waste collected from amnesty boxes and your own items, join Surridge at sculptural workstations to collect copper wire, steel, aluminium and other metals that are trapped in discarded electronic devices.

Surridge will then use the metals and parts extracted together in processes such as recasting, electroplating and even bioleaching (a process that uses microbes to extract metals from e-waste) to produce new sculptures.

In addition, 100 free makers packs will be available to take home. Katie designed the packs in collaboration with the University of Leeds; they contain pieces of her sculpture which require your help electroplating.

About

Katie Surridge is an artist and sculptor. Her current work researches the utilisation of other art forms of the past such as  smelting or flint knapping. Katie is interested in how various technical and cultural processes affect the aesthetics of objects which they make.

DARE is a unique collaboration between Opera North and the University of Leeds, the first partnership of its kind in the UK. Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary in 2022, DARE is a world leader in building collaborations between the arts and higher education.
