Newell’s practice centres around a relatively simple process of painting and drawing. He overlays and edits, responding to memory, intuition and direct observation.
Sense of merriment: a new Café Commission by Rufus Newell
Discover our new Café Commission by Leeds based artist Rufus Newell: Sense of merriment, a series of paintings and drawings that meanders throughout The Tetley Bar & Kitchen.
Here at The Tetley, being social is a central part of our ethos. We want people to use our building to meet friends, family and colleagues, to make new connections and to relax.
Newell’s Café Commission responds to the social purpose of our spaces and hopes to convey a sense of joy and relaxation. Depicting herbs, botanicals and glassware, the work focuses on the tactile details of a bar and the various ingredients that can help make a jolly evening.
Make sure you look out for Newell’s work around our spaces when you next visit!
About
The Tetley’s Café Commission presents wall-based artwork especially commissioned for our café, bar and restaurant. Working with an artist based in Leeds, this playful, expressive artwork combines our love for contemporary art, food and drink, and Yorkshire. The Tetley prioritises using local suppliers, minimising food waste and reducing our carbon footprint.
This work was commissioned as part of Bombay Sapphire’s ‘Saw This, Made This’ campaign, inviting an artist to create an original piece of visual art inspired by their surroundings. The artist’s work then inspires a bespoke cocktail – ask one of our team to try it yourself.
An edition by Newell will also be available to purchase in our Shop – coming soon!
