The Tetley weekender 2017: Performance art intensive

  • 4–6 Aug 2017

In the summer of 2017 we became a laboratory to incubate new works and collaborations as part of a Performance art intensive, led by established performance artists Nikhil Chopra, Madhavi Gore and Jana Prepeluh, known collectively as BODYWORKSHOP.

Using The Tetley’s unique gallery spaces, this week-long intensive offered twelve artists – six based in South Asia and six from the UK – an innovative way of working across continents to devise work and develop new relationships.

This was the first time The Tetley’s gallery spaces were utilised as studio spaces to develop an exciting series of new work, culminating in a public weekend of performances and talks. It formed part of the New North and South network, a three-year partnership between eleven arts organisations from South Asia and the North of England.

A weekend of public events saw the participating artists present existing work and new collaborations resulting from the residency. An accompanying series of talks and open workshops were programmed in discussion with participating artists exploring performance today in the UK and South Asia, and unpicking influences from visual art, theatre and dance.
